100_1800-300x225 Alexander Park in Gwinnett CountyWork is on schedule for a winter, 2009 opening of phase 1 of Alexander Park. Located between Scenic Highway and Old Snellville Highway in Lawrenceville, Alexander Park is a 91 acre site that will be developed in 2 phases. When phase 1 is complete Gwinnett County residents will be able to enjoy the following amenities:

  • 1 mile soft surface trail
  • 1.5 mile multi-use (paved) trail
  • 26 acre disc golf course
  • plaza area with terraced seating area for performances
  • shelter and playground
  • “Meadow” for open space activities like kite flying and picnics
  • 2 Bocce Courts, 2 horseshoe pits and a picnic shelter

Gwinnett Park policy is to have sidewalks along the sides of the park that border a road. That means there will be a new sidewalk running along the park side of Old Snellville Highway. The entrance to the park off Old Snellville Highway is to be from a three way stop. This will allow for a safe crosswalk from the Downyshire Drive entrance to Flowers Crossing at The Mill subdivision. If there is still money in the budget there will also be two piers overlooking the pond that’s in the middle of the property. When completed the park will offer parking for 450 cars and will be a welcome addition to Gwinnett Counties vast parks and recreation department.

Phase II has yet to be funded, but it will eventually include a dog park area, two soccer fields, a teen recreation area and a signature architectural element on the high ground of the park. All of these will be on the Highway 124 side of the park.

For additional information I am providing a link to the Alexander Park Master Plan which is in PDF format.

is there a fence aronnd the park? this is a safey concern. The teen recreation area is more of a concern as seen when Reagan Park opened. Now that park is a place where teens can get into illegal trouble. Something we do not want in our neighborhood.

It would be great if the future dog park could include a swimming area near the pond–first of its kind in Gwinnett (or likely the state)

Hello. It would be really neat if you could arrange access to the pond for dogs to swim. Currently I have to take my dogs either to Lake Lanier or the Chattahoochee, both which are much further away.

Nice plans, good luck with completion!

If there is a swimming pool, that would be great.
Inexpensive fees would help to contribute more recreation facilites in the Park.

I am with Tammy and Kyle . . . we have an adorable chocolate lab who loves to swim and a dog park would be so great. Please, please, please consider this and make it happen!

In response to Ellen ~
I don’t feel that fensing around the park is necessary for safty reasons – they don’t keep bad people out – and it would really only take away from beauty of the park. And in regards to the Skate Park concern – kids are doing illegal things in your neighborhood already, make no illusion. Skate Parks give kids a place to enjoy a unique sport in a place away from the streets, cars, and and trouble. I’ve been skating for years and the parks are the places least likely to see “illegal things” happening – because there’s always a lot of people there and police keep good tabs on it at night.

If “teens get into illegal trouble” in the park it’s their own fault for doing whatever they’re doing in a public park, rather than in their homes, off in the woods, or wherever they’re doing it now. If you’re concerned about heretofore law-abiding teens being attracted to illegal trouble in the park, you might do well to consider where they’re being attracted to it now.

How did the park get it’s name?

Gail October 3, 2009 at 8:32 am

We visited the park with the Snellville mothers group. We loved the play are but…..it would have been even better if I didn’t have to chase two kids (12 months and 3 1/2yrs) going every which way. It was hard to keep an eye on each of them around all the climbing toys. It’s hard to see around them. Several moms were freaking out about the fake mountain top! The fear of broken arms with a fall was great.

A fenced in play area would have been more relaxing for the moms! And a fence separating the two areas will also be great. That way the younger ones could not get to the mountain top!

Gail the park got it’s name from the Alexander Family who owned and farmed the property. the following was copied from the Gwinnett county site:

Jane and the late James Alexander had farmed the land since 1949, raising cattle and poultry. She taught in Gwinnett County Public Schools for 25 years and taught Sunday school at Snellville United Methodist Church even longer. James was an agent for the Gwinnett County Extension Service until he retired in 1963.

How long is the paved trail? I have searched on the GCPR websites and have read 1.4 miles to 3.7 miles.

Hi Patrick. Check out the Alexander Park Master Plan link above. It shows that the paved trail is aprox 1.5 miles long. It is a very nice walking trail and has been utilized virtually every day since the park opened. I even saw some people walking yesterday in the misting rain.
