Falcons Hire Petrino

The Atlanta Falcons wasted no time in hiring new head coach Bobby Petrino. Most recently from the University of Louisville, where he had a 41 and 9 record as a head coach and finished the 2006 season with a 12 and 1 record, Petrino may be just what the doctor ordered for the Falcons. He is viewed as having an offensive mind which should match up well with the Falcons talented running game, receiving corps and Mr. Excitement, Michael Vick.

Congratulations on your new endeavor Coach Petrino. May your standard of excellence continue with the Falcons.

Falcon’s Fire Mora

January 2, 2007 | 1 Comment

Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, fired Jim Mora on Monday. Mr. Blank held true to his statement that an 8 and 8 season and not making the playoffs this year was unacceptable. The Falcons started the year at 5 wins and 2 losses only to finish at 7 and 9, even worse than last years 8 and 8 record.

Coach Mora’s statement on Seattle radio that his dream job would be coaching his alma mater, The University of Washington, did not sit well with management and may have been the final straw.

It seems as though there is not a large group of qualified canidates for the head coaching job with the Falcons. Rich McKay, president and general manager, may well be assigned his toughest job ever in finding the replacement.

So, what do you think? Who would be the best canidate? Will the Falcons ever be the powerhouse that their payroll should command?

Chick-Fil-A Bowl

As a University of Georgia fan (some might even say fanatic) this years Chick-Fil-A Bowl was one of the best games I have witnessed. Georgia scored first on a field goal, then Virginia Tech scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter. Georgia was down 21-3 at halftime and having to come out in the second half against the #1 rated defense in the nation.

Georgia was up to the challenge, scoring 28 points in the second half and finishing with a 31-24 win. But who is the real winner in this game? Examine some of the facts:

  • The Chick-Fil-A Bowl has sold out in each of it’s 10 years.
  • This years attendance was 75,406.
  • The Chick-Fil-A bowl is the largest non BCS Bowl game.
  • With participating teams coming from the SEC and ACC, Atlanta makes an excellent central location.

From an economic standpoint the City of Atlanta and it’s local merchants are certainly big winners. However, local charities benefit in a large way from the game. Last year the Chick-Fil-A Bowl contributed $526,000.00 to local charities. This year an estimated $535,000.00 will contributed.

Congratulations Chick-Fil-A Bowl, Ya’ll Done Good!

Congratulations Co-Champs

High School Football in the south is almost a religion. This year’s 5-AAAAA Georgia State Championship game was played tonight between two local Metro Atlanta High Schools. Roswell High School, a perenial powerhouse, and Peachtree Ridge High School, founded just over four years ago, played to a 14-14 tie. Georgia High School football rules do not allow for any type of overtime or tie breaker. While it is fairly certain that the players would have liked to settle this on the feild, perhaps it may be better to be co-champions and share the distinction. Congratulations go out to Peachtree Ridge High School and Roswell High School football programs. You are “Champions”.
