gsmst_front_elevation_rendering_web-300x199 Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and TechnologyRecently I received an email inviting me to an educational meeting at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce this
morning. Since I try to stay abreast of what is happening regarding education in
Gwinnett County so that I can better advise my clients and keep them up to date with what is going on I decided to attend. Was I ever glad that I did!

The speaker at this mornings meeting was Dr. Jeffrey Mathews, principal of Gwinnett School of Mathematics,
Science and Technology
, also know as GSMST. GSMST is a part of Gwinnett County Public Schools and is currently meeting in building 100 of
Duluth High School and will have its own campus in the fall of 2010 near the intersection
of
Sugarloaf Parkway and Old Norcross Road. Since GSMST is a charter school, enrollment is open to all current Gwinnett County 8th grade students who complete the 8th grade requirements and reside in Gwinnett County.

Because this is a school of choice it is highly recommended that parents and students review the curriculum
to learn more about the school prior to registering. GSMST is focused on 3 primary areas in its curriculum; Bioscience, Engineering and Emerging Technology. This school is all about academics and there are no athletic teams. Since it’s all about learning, Dr. Mathews stated that the school staff is either teachers or support staff for the teachers.

For any student interested in attending Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology applications for next year enrollment must be submitted by January 23, 2009 to be considered.

Hello. I am an 8th grader residing in Gwinnett County, and I am sure that I exceed in the requirements for this standard. If you could, please e-mail me the process of enrollment/registering at vn330i@gmail.com.

Thank you very much.

Hi Tahira, Are you at Etowah High School in Woodstock? If that is the case then this school would be an extremely long commute for you.

Once your family decides on where you are moving to, you can then look for schools in close proximity to your new home. Should you decide to move to Gwinnett County then GSMST would be an excellent option and I would be happy to assist your family with their home purchase.

Okay thank you very much .
I just would like to know what grades would be excepted at GSMST .

tahira –

don’t move to gwinnett county with the intent of going to GSMST – they only take graduating 8th graders (rising 9th graders).

just thought you should know before buying a home here.

Can I enroll next year even though I am in 10th grade.

Hi Paul,

I would suggest contacting the school directly.

Hi,
I’m a student currently enrolled at GSMST.
I only know of 1 person who has transferred to my school.
Unless your transcript is off the charts, and you’ve taken all required courses then you probably won’t be accepted.
Grades alone probably won’t get you in. I think you need a lot of recommendations.
But if you’re applying as a rising 9th grader, then all you need is to fill out the applications.

I go to GSMST and it rocks, about the transfering in, sorry you cant do it. :( While I`m sure if someone tryed they could do it, the cirriculum is so fast that you would ever catch up.

GSMST accepts applications from rising 9th graders only and there are deadlines for application.(Ex. Jan 2012 for 2012-2013 school year). But before registering there, please review the curriculum. The students won’t have enough time for anything. In 9th grade students finish Physics(which is taught in 11th gr. in reg HS) & Engg Concepts in one semester and, Chemistry & LA in the second semester(plus 3 other courses run yearlong). GSMST has honors or AP programs only. And you can’t move to regular HS if you can’t cope up with the curriculum and homework, because of the courses finished by half the time. This school will work only for high geniuses . Lot of the students register there transfer to other schools, after their GPA’s are so bad and with broken hearts. There are students failed in both block classes who were in gifted program in middle school.

Hi… I’m an 8th grader, and I live in the Gwinnett County district. I was going to go to Peachtree Ridge, but I wanted to go to GSMST. However, I am a swimmer so I’m upset that there are no athletic teams. As I was reading the website, there are even physicals for intermurals! Do you know if there is any way that GSMST can have sports, like if I get a petition signed?

Thank you, please respond :)

Keenan December 3, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Sorry, but GSMST can’t have sports because it’s a charter school. that’s one of the rules/catches to being a charter school. Petitions won’t help.

Hi,
I am applying ot GSMST, but now I am regretting it. I am not worried about no athletic program (I do not play tennis on a school league level), but I am worried about the workload. I usually work very hard to get my work done, even on days I have other event.
I wanted to know how much time homework takes? Will I still have time to go play tennis or dance? Or does GSMST work occupy the entire day to midnight?

Please let me know as soon as possible.

Keenan January 19, 2012 at 5:25 pm

It depends on the kind of learner that you are. some of my friends never have to study and they get great grades and don’t have to spend much time on homework. I, on the other hand, have to study to get the same kind of grades, so i had anywhere from 3-5 hours of homework a night ( including study time). i will say that if you sign up for the easiest classes, you will still be challenged but you will have more ime for things other than school.
